Early life

Doug Anthony Hutchison was born in Dover, Delaware, the son of Deloris and Richard Hutchison. He spent most of his childhood in Detroit, Michigan and Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has a younger brother named Erik. Years later, he moved to New York City. There, he studied with actor Sanford Meisner for two years. Hutchison made ends meet through odd-jobs, including dressing as a Citibank card while handing out fliers in Times Square.

Career

Hutchison began acting in high school productions at Apple Valley High School in Minnesota. Shortly after graduating from high school, at the age of 18, he starred in a Minneapolis production of Equus, to highly positive reviews. His other early stage credits include Sing Me Through an Open Window and Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

Hutchison has made several guest apperarences on notable shows, such as The Young Riders, Eugene Victor Tooms in The X-Files, a recurring role as the silicate, Elroy-El in Space: Above and Beyond, as 'Omega' on another Chris Carter show, Millennium, Horace Goodspeed in Lost, Sebastian Hulce on the soap opera The Guiding Light, as serial killer Humphrey Becker in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and the TV series Kidnapped, alongside Delroy Lindo. Recently, he has guest starred as Davros, a European terrorist in 24.

Hutchison entered the film business at the end of the 1980s, portraying Sproles in the 1988 drama film Fresh Horses and Obie Jameson in the film adaptation of The Chocolate War. In the 1990s he appeared in films such as The Lawnmower Man (1992), as racist James Louis 'Pete' Willard in A Time to Kill (1996), Con Air (1997), and Batman & Robin (1997). In 1999, Hutchison was cast as troublemaking prison guard Percy Wetmore in the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Green Mile, for which he received critical acclaim. He continued his career by having supporting roles in the 2000 films Shaft and Bait, I Am Sam (2001), and 2002 films The Salton Sea and No Good Deed. Hutchison's career decreased in the 2000s, when he instead began receiving offers for short films and direct-to-video films. However, he was cast as the brother of Billy Russoti, James "Looney Bin Jim" Russoti in Punisher: War Zone, based on the antihero The Punisher. He starred alongside Thomas Jane and Ving Rhames in Give 'em Hell, Malone, released in 2009.

In October 2008, Hutchison's production company, Dark Water, debuted the web series Vampire Killers, which depicts four vampire hunters combating a vampire population of over 500,000 in modern Los Angeles.

In October 2012, Hutchison and his third wife, Courtney Stodden, appeared as one of the celebrity couples in the second season of the Vh1 reality television series Couples Therapy, which depicts celebrity couples undergoing counseling for relationship problems. According to Stodden, the couple enrolled in therapy in order to resolve issues that arose in their marriage from their age difference.

Personal life

On May 20, 2011, Hutchison married Courtney Stodden in Las Vegas, Nevada. Stodden is Hutchison's third wife, and they met when Stodden attended an acting class that was being taught by Hutchison. Their relationship drew controversy and criticism, as Stodden was 16 when she married 51-year-old Hutchison, who has been labeled a "pedophile" and "predator". According to Hutchison, as a result of his marriage to Stodden, his agent quit, his family disowned him, and he received death threats.

Despite this, Dr. Jenn Berman, the Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist who worked with the couple during their appearance on Couples Therapy, stressed that she does not believe that Hutchison is, or was, seeking out young people, saying, "He's not a predator. He"s not someone, who if Courtney left him, would be trolling the Internet or high schools for underage girls. That's not his m.o. This is not a guy who was seeking out teenagers. He was teaching a class, she wanted to be an actress, it was an acting class...And that"s how it started."

Though Berman was eventually surprised by the dynamic between the two, she commented on her initial hesitations about working with the couple, saying, "I believe it was the wrong decision to let a 16-year-old marry a man in his 50s. It"s uncomfortable to see" [at first] I said to my producer, "I think this guy is a pedophile"I don"t know if I can work with these people." I don"t condone it, but I do see that this is a married couple that is genuinely married and they have marital issues that needed to be worked on. I came in saying, 'She"s a victim, he"s a predator.' What I found out was that she has a lot more power in this relationship, and he is far more powerless, than I expected. His family has completely disowned him" He, unfortunately, has nothing besides her." Hutchison was also defended by Stodden's mother, Krista Keller, who praised him for the kindness with which he treats Stodden.
