Young Ohio fan who named tumor 'Michigan' beats his rival

UPI News Service, 07/10/2013

The Ohio parents of a young Ohio State fan said their son has "beaten Michigan," which is the name he gave his brain tumor.

Troy and Denise Reed, who met when they both played in the Ohio State University Marching Band, said they passed down their diehard Buckeyes passion to their son, Grant, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 10 two years ago, WCMH-TV, Columbus, Ohio, reported Wednesday.

The parents said the boy named his tumor "Michigan," after Ohio State's rival school, the University of Michigan.

Grant, who will turn 13 in August, completed his final chemotherapy treatment Friday.

"We've beaten Michigan for the short term, but like any rival, there's a chance it can come back," Troy Reed said.

Grant received a December visit from OSU head Coach Urban Meyer, and Michigan head Coach Brady Hoke told Sports Illustrated Kids he applauded Grant's accomplishment.

"Grant's story is inspirational and shows how special this great rivalry is to so many people. Our team breaks each meeting with 'Beat Ohio,' and I think we can all agree this is one circumstance where it's acceptable to say 'Beat Michigan.' Now, what we hope and pray for is that Grant never has to battle 'Michigan' again," Hoke said.
