Young boy locked in gun safe at store

UPI News Service, 08/15/2007

A 10-year-old boy spent 15 minutes locked inside a gun safe at a Worcester, Mass., Sam's Club store.

Daniel Jancura -- along with his older brother, Thomas, and their cousin, Tiffany Sackett -- opened and shut the door of the safe several times while at the store with the boys' mother, Laura Jancura, before Daniel climbed in, The Worcester (Mass.) Telegram & Gazette reported Wednesday.

"My brother saw a safe and opened it somehow. He just pressed numbers," Daniel said later.

The first time Daniel climbed inside the 575-pound safe, his cousin was able to free him by punching in some numbers. However, the second time they were unable to free him.

The fire department was summoned to the scene and Sam's Club employees were able to retrieve an override code from the manufacturer of the safe, but a security feature forced them to wait several minutes before putting in the code.

"We kind of talked to Dan and kept him busy and asked him some idle questions to keep him talking to make sure we had communications," said Deputy Fire Chief John Sullivan. "He was pretty well aware of what was going on in there. He was a trouper."
