Worst passwords: 'Password,' '123456'

UPI News Service, 11/18/2011

A California company said "password" is the No. 1 least-secure password utilized by users of Facebook and other Web sites.

SplashData of Los Gatos, which developed a popular password management data application, urged anyone using "password" or any of the other insecure passwords on the list, including "123456," "abc123," "iloveyou," "qwerty," "monkey," "dragon" and "baseball," to immediately switch to something more secure, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

"Hackers can easily break into many accounts just by repeatedly trying common passwords," said Morgan Slain, chief executive of SplashData.

"Even though people are encouraged to select secure, strong passwords, many people continue to choose weak, easy-to-guess ones, placing themselves at risk from fraud and identity theft."

SplashData released the list after Facebook announced last week that hackers attempt to access 600,000 Facebook accounts each day. The social network has about 800 million members.
