Patti Farrant, who has three grown children by a previous marriage, decided to try motherhood again at age 62 because her husband, John, wanted to be a father. She gave birth to a 6-pound boy Wednesday.
"I had some apprehensions before the birth, but it all went very smoothly and entirely to plan," Patti Farrant told the Daily Mail in an exclusive interview. "JJ is absolutely beautiful, a perfect small person."
The birth makes her the oldest known new mother in Britain. But the couple had to go to a Russian clinic because no clinic in Britain will accept a would-be mom over the age of 55.
John Farrant said he feels a "huge sense of responsibility and tremendous love" for his son.
"When I first held him I was simply awestruck. I thought 'Here he is after all this waiting and we'll be together forever because I'm his daddy,'" he said.
Farrant said he never wanted to be a parent until he married Patti, a child psychiatrist who uses the name Dr. Patricia Rashbrook professionally.
