Winter storm travel woes hit pets equally hard

UPI News Service, 12/29/2004

Caged pets shared miseries with human counterparts at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport paralyzed by a winter storm.

The winter storm that socked Cincinnati last week had grounded Comair flights until Wednesday. That meant long days in transport cages for several pets, the Cincinnati Post reported.

Comair officials could not say how many animals remained confined, but employees volunteered to take pooches home over the weekend rather than leave them at the airport kennel.

Even under best circumstances, traveling can be tough on pets, said veterinarian Megan Davis. Larger dogs feel cramped in their pet carriers during the extended confinement, and hunting and herding dogs probably feel a little stir crazy, she said.

Cats might have a harder time than dogs hanging out at the airport as cats like a quiet, home-type atmosphere.
