Water waste for art's sake

UPI News Service, 03/20/2006

A British artist plans to let six taps drip for a year, wasting millions of gallons of water, to dramatize British water waste.

Mark McGowan abandoned a similar artwork last year, albeit one involving a paltry single tap, when Thames Water threatened to take him to court. He says he will keep the water company at bay this time by not revealing the location of his taps, The Mirror reported.

The water company, dealing with a severe drought, has already threatened legal action.

The stunt, if McGowan follows through with it, could sacrifice 100 million liters (26 million gallons) of water to art. McGowan's single tap used a mere 800,000 gallons.

"I understand we are in a drought, but I am an artist so I'm not wasting water for nothing," McGowan said.

He says that Thames Valley and other water companies waste millions of gallons every year.

The water company called on McGowan, who once posed in a bathtub full of baked beans with sausages on his head to support the traditional English breakfast, to give up his "childish stunt."
