UPI News Service, 07/13/2011

Officials in a Detroit suburb said complaints have been arriving via phone, mail and social networking sites after a woman was cited for her vegetable garden.

Julie Bass of Oak Park, who was cited in June for having a vegetable garden in her front yard, said the ordinance she was cited under does not forbid vegetable gardens in front yards, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

"Show us where it says we are wrong," Bass said of the ordinance.

Oak Park officials said they have been receiving phone calls and hate mail from around the world after Bass posted about her citation on her blog and a Facebook page titled "Oak Park Hates Veggies," The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

"We're not against people having gardens," City Manager Rick Fox told the Free Press. "Just not in their front yards."

Bass is scheduled to make a court appearance July 26.
