Fading film star Val Kilmer has apologized to New Mexico officials and residents for disparaging comments attributed to him by magazines in the past.

Kilmer's film credits include "Real Genius," "Top Gun," "The Doors," "Tombstone," "Thunderheart," "Batman Forever" and "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang."

The actor, who reportedly has lived in New Mexico for decades, was quoted as describing his neighbors as heavy drinkers and criminals.

The Wall Street Journal said he apologized this week for comments to the San Miguel County Commission and local residents at the courthouse in Las Vegas, N.M., about 70 miles east of Santa Fe.

"I hope that you can recognize my deep regret for the impact my comments have had on you, my neighbors, as well as our state," the Journal quoted Kilmer as reading from a prepared statement Wednesday. "I am, and wish to remain, a contributing member of our community."

He also said quotes attributed to him several years ago by Rolling Stone and Esquire were taken out of context.

"I never intended for any statements I made to be construed as derogatory, racially prejudiced or disparaging," Kilmer said.

The five-member commission also granted Kilmer a permit to open his Pecos River Ranch to paying guests as a bed and breakfast.

County Attorney Jesus Lopez told the newspaper the county accepted Kilmer's apology.

"We hope this is now behind us and we can all live as good neighbors," Lopez added.
