UPI News Service, 10/26/2005

A Cedar City, Utah, radio host was fired for mocking Mexicans during his show.

Former California Highway Patrol trooper Paul Fice made the remark during "Trade-io" on KSUB, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.

During the call-in show that lets listeners sell or trade a variety of items, someone called seeking to sell a Mexican roping saddle.

Fice tried to make a joke, saying the saddle could be used to "rope Mexicans" sneaking across the U.S. border, the newspaper said.

One listener called to complain during the show and a day later, Fice was out of a job.

Fice told the Tribune he was only kidding, adding the show's pace really doesn't give him time to think before reacting.

"I'd take 45 to 50 calls a day and try to be funny," he said. "In our operation there was nothing to recapture and check what you say on the air."
