U.S. House gets rid of 'Meatless Mondays' sign

UPI News Service, 06/26/2013

The U.S. House Administration Committee said it took care of a complaint from the Farm Animal Welfare Coalition about a "Meatless Mondays" cafeteria sign.

The FAWC, a group of pork and other livestock interests, sent a June 7 letter to the committee complaining the Longworth cafeteria, located in the same building as the offices of the House Agriculture Committee, was holding "Meatless Mondays" promotions, Politico reported Wednesday.

"'Meatless Mondays' is an acknowledged tool of animal rights and environmental organizations who seek to publicly denigrate U.S. livestock and poultry production," FAWC wrote.

Dan Weiser, a spokesman for the House Administration's Chief Administrative Office, said meat dishes remained available at the cafeteria, and the "Meatless Mondays" sign was placed at one food station to promote a vegetarian alternative.

"It was one sign, one work station, one day," Weiser said.

He said both meat and meatless options "always will" be available during cafeteria hours.
