Updated Prince Charles coronation planned in Britain

UPI News Service, 12/26/2004

Preparations are under way to update the coronation and other ceremonies of the accession of Britain's Prince Charles.

"A lot has happened since the (queen's) coronation in 1953 -- there will be a large number of differences. I don't mind the word modernizing," said Edward William Fitzalan-Howard, the Duke of Norfolk, who is responsible for the coronation planning. "I have been secretly planning and secretly thinking and secretly consulting and secretly liaisoning."

The duke said he has already completed a revised plan for the 78-year-old queen's funeral, the Times of London reported Sunday.

The new coronation ceremony creates a new role for leaders of non-Christian religions in the service. Prince Charles's office is conducting its own review of the accession ceremonies.

Meanwhile, the Bishop of Salisbury David Stancliffe, said a civil marriage might be possible for Charles and his companion, Camilla Parker Bowles, who is divorced. However, an act of Parliament would be required before a civil ceremony can be performed.
