'Underworld Awakening' tops movie box office, 'Red Tails' second

The supernatural fantasy horror-thriller "Underworld Awakening" was No. 1 at the U.S. box office during the weekend with $25.4 million in receipts.

"Red Tails" George Lucas's homage to the black Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, was No. 2 with $19.1 million, and "Contraband," starring Mark Wahlberg, dropped from first to No. 3 with $12.2 million in receipts.

"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," about the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attack on New York's World Trade Center, took in $10.5 million for fourth and "Haywire" was No. 5 with $9 million.

All studio estimates of gross U.S. box office receipts are via Box Office Mojo.

Rounding out the Top 10 at the box office were "Beauty and the Beast (3D) at No. 6 with $8.5 million, "Joyful Noise" No. 7 with $6.07 million, "Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol eighth with $5.54 million and "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" ninth with $4.8 million.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)" was 10th with more than $3.75 million.
