The Chicago Sun-Times reports John R. Vashko took control of the Piper Warrior four-seat plane shortly after takeoff when student Casey Mattuck noticed something wrong.
Mattuck said they decided to turn back to Schaumburg Regional Airport after the plane failed to reach full throttle and leveled off at less than 400 feet.
Soon they realized they wouldn't make it to the airport runway and opted to makeshift one on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway.
Just before landing there the wing hit a light pole and the plane flipped upside down, skidding across the concrete and landing in Hanover Park.
Both sustained minor injuries.
This is the first crash 62-year-old Vashko has been involved in, his brother said.
Witness Matt Keefe was driving down the highway when the plane cruised low above him. Keefe, also a recreational pilot, commended Vashko for how he handled what could have been a deadly situation.
