UPI News Service, 01/22/2005

Eric Clapton, Charlotte Church and the Manic Street Preachers headlined a concert in Wales Saturday to raise funds for the tsunami relief effort.

The concert at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium quickly sold out, Sky News reported, raising the prospect the event would meet its fund-raising goals.

"We have incredible artists for what is going to be an incredibly successful event," said stadium manager Paul Sergeant. "We are on target to raise ($1.87 million), and that was what we set out to achieve."

Participating artists donated their time so proceeds from the performance could help tsunami-ravaged South Asia.

Mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins opened the show with "Amazing Grace" and "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Besides Clapton, Church and the Manic Street Preachers, other performers included Keane, Badly Drawn Boy, Feeder, Lemar, Lulu, Craig David, Embrace, Goldie Lookin' Chain, Heather Small, Kelly Jones, Aled Jones, Raghav, Snow Patrol, Brian McFadden and Jools Holland.
