The father of a 2-month-old gorilla at the Toronto Zoo selected the name for his son Wednesday based on his choice of one of five containers of snacks.

Charles, a western lowland gorilla, culminated a contest to name the infant from thousands of entries from the public, the Toronto Star reported.

The contest stipulated the new name must start with the first letter of his mother's name, Ngozi, and zoo staff whittled the entries down to 10. In the past two weeks, more than 10,000 people voted online for the final five.

Five buckets of various gorilla treats such as fresh and dried fruits and nuts were offered to Charles, and he began munching from the bucket labeled "Nassir," the report said. In Arabic, the name means, "protector," zoo officials said.

The other four finalist names were Neo, Nico, Nigel or Nsambu, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
