Tommy Cooper tops Britian's 'King of Comedy' list

UPI News Service, 01/01/2005

Comedian Tommy Cooper has topped the British King or Queen of Comedy list, compiled by the food company McCain.

McCain's compiled the list to mark its sponsorship of Comic Relief, the Glasgow Daily Record reported Saturday.

Most of the top 10 comics are already dead, and "The Office's" Ricky Gervais, ranked at No. 13, was the highest rated current comic.

Dawn French, from the TV series the "Vicar Of Dibley" ranked No. 19, was the only woman included in the list of 20 top comics.

Eric Morecambe was runner-up, followed by "Pink Panther" star Peter Sellers, Benny Hill and John Cleese, of "Monty Python" and "Fawlty Towers."

"We wanted to find out who was the all-time British King or Queen of Comedy to launch our support for Red Nose Day 2005 and clearly Tommy Cooper was the nation's favorite laughter-maker," McCain spokeswoman Jane White said.
