'The View' heads oppose Elisabeth Hasselbeck's John McCain T-shirt
UPI News Service, 10/25/2008
A political T-shirt worn by "The View" co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck during a recent broadcast was inappropriate, officials with the U.S. show say.
A "View" spokesman said series executive producers Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie didn't like Hasselbeck's decision to wear a T-shirt that voiced support for Republican U.S. presidential nominee John McCain, the New York Daily News reported Friday.
"Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie, executive producers of 'The View,' don't think it's appropriate to wear T-shirts endorsing either candidate but would never forbid any of the co-hosts from expressing themselves," the unidentified spokesman said in a statement.
The dispute over the "Great AmeriCain hero" T-shirt marks the most recent kerfuffle on the popular ABC talk show, which previously has been marked by fights between Hasselbeck and her liberal co-hosts.
But "View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg says such verbal conflicts never involve any "personal" attacks, the Daily News reported.
"What we want the viewers to understand -- is that you can disagree with your friends, loved ones, and not make it personal," Goldberg said.
