An offer was reportedly put on the table for the two main stars, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, to continue the series, but no agreement was reached, the Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

The network and studio released a joint announcement that said the show's end is a "sad moment."

"This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television's most memorable, lovable characters," the statement said.

"We would also like to thank the critics and 'Gilmore' fans for their passionate support and promise to give this series the send off it deserves," the statement added.

"Gilmore Girls" was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino.
