Donna Shelby, 19, was sentenced to a day in jail along with six months probation for walking out of a Valparaiso restaurant without paying her bill, The New York Times reports.
Shelby and her cousin made it all the way to the parking lot before their waitress caught up with them.
"If I had to do it again, I'd either never walk into that restaurant or I'd just pay the bill," Shelby said.
After being dropped off at the jail Thanksgiving morning, Shelby was sent to the kitchen to scrub dishes.
Initially, Judge David Chidester of Porter County Court gave Shelby the choice of working in the restaurant kitchen to pay off her debt or spending a day in jail.
However, the restaurant declined to allow her to work off her sentence there.
