"It's been a roller coaster of emotions. It's been a crazy last few weeks," Taylor, 24, told People.

Taylor, a mental health counselor who currently resides in Seattle, WA, and Derek, who currently lives in Iowa, are apparently in no rush to move in together.

"We're not looking to necessarily go straight to living together," said Derek, a 30-year-old commercial banker.

"We probably won't see that for a while. He's open to coming to Seattle. We also want to have that normal romance that might seem a little boring like going over to your boyfriend's house, we haven't really had that. So we want to hold off on living with each other for a while."

After Derek disclosed they've "talked about it," Taylor reiterated how they're "not in a rush" to progress their relationship to that next stage.

"We're trying to maintain the romance as much as can," Derek added.

Taylor and Derek had an "amazing" time in Paradise together, but their romance was a slow burn, and they waited until the Fantasy Suite to have sex for the first time.

"I definitely had started to fall in love with Taylor while we were [in Mexico], but once I went to Seattle and saw her friends and family, it definitely was seeing her heart connect with her loved ones and her animals," Derek shared.

"There was one morning where we were drinking coffee on the porch looking at Mt. Rainier and reflecting and I was dang, I love this girl."

The first time Derek traveled to Seattle, he actually surprised her by staying for a full three weeks.

"I had my flight back and I had already changed it and I pretended that I hadn't. She was all depressed that I wasn't going to be there the next day. We've spent a lot of time together. Sometimes too much!" Derek revealed.

"We've gotten better about incorporating space into our relationship," she noted. "That's really important for me. We communicate about everything.

When Bachelor in Paradise's in-studio finale reportedly taped on August 30, Taylor insisted to People that she did not see a marriage proposal coming that night.

"I thought there was a three percent chance. We had talked about taking next steps and what that would look like," Taylor explained.

"We looked at rings to talk about what she does like," Derek said. "We broached the subject a bunch. But I was definitely trying to surprise her."

"I was surprised!" she noted.

As for the couple's wedding plans, Taylor and Derek said they are "open to whatever," such as a televised wedding.

"It's something we're open-minded about," Derek shared. "[Evan Bass] told me just be with her, be with each other and don't get too far engaged in what other people think. That was the best advice."

Before appearing on Season 4 of Bachelor in Paradise, Taylor competed for Nick Viall's heart on The Bachelor and Derek fought for the attention and affection of JoJo Fletcher on The Bachelorette's twelfth season.
