Student gets 30 days for cake assault

UPI News Service, 12/04/2006

A Norwegian business college student received a 30-day jail term Monday for throwing a cream cake at the Finance minister on her first day at work.

A court in Oslo said that a "stern signal" is needed that throwing cakes at Cabinet members is not an appropriate means of political protest, Aftenposten reported. John Waagaard, 24, has said he was upset because Kristin Halvorsen had received the powerful post in a coalition government even though her Socialist Left Party had received only 8 percent of the vote.

Waagaard, who reportedly discussed his plans with other customers while he waited in line at a bakery, ambushed Halvorsen outside the Finance Ministry on her first day of work. The assault delayed her schedule for about an hour while she cleaned up and changed clothes.
