Police said the 6-foot bronze statue of a woman, which originally stood as part of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, was discovered by police officers conducting a training exercise in the river Wednesday morning, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.

The statue, "The Nude" by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, was installed at the memorial in 1947 and has an estimated value of $100,000.

Mark Weber, president of the war memorial, said the statue was stolen in 2001, The Detroit News reported.

The statue was taken to a Coast Guard station at Belle Isle, where officials said it will remain until it is reclaimed by memorial staff.
