A Spanish restaurateur said he began selling insect-based dishes to his customers after discovering how popular bugs were as a food source in Thailand.
Marco Negroni, owner of Bar Passion in Valladolid, said he discovered insects being sold "as though they were bags of potatoes" in Bangkok markets during a trip to Thailand six years ago and the menu at his eatery has since grown to include insect-based dishes, ThinkSpain reported Monday.
The bar and restaurant is offering rhino beetle in Mediterranean hummus, spicy grasshoppers in guacamole, leaf-eating ants in aloe vera yogurt and mini-toasts with imperial Thai scorpion, olive oil, tomato and grated cheese.
Negroni said his eatery specializes in Spanish tapas and international dishes, but the insect dishes have become the restaurant's most popular items.
