In the "everything old is new again" world of fashion, the so-called skinny jean is poised to make a comeback in the United States.

The style made popular by 1980s punk rockers is getting ready to make a run on the market dominated for years by the boot cut jean, USA Today reports.

Stars such as Cameron Diaz, Hilary Duff and Avril Lavigne were all sporting the straight leg, slim fit jeans at Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards, the newspaper noted. "American Idol" contestants Kellie Pickler, Lisa Tucker and Katharine McPhee have all recently been seen on the Fox TV talent competition in the style.

Although designers re-introduced them two years ago, the jeans are only now being featured by mainstream retailers across the United States, Lucky fashion director Hope Greenberg told USA Today. One online retailer reports an 80 percent jump in skinny jeans sales since last summer.

"A year ago, you couldn't even find them in the mall, and now it has absolutely trickled down," Greenberg said.
