A former surgeon who pleaded guilty to stalking singer Shania Twain was released from Canada's Don Jail Tuesday after seven months in custody, officials said.

Giovanni Palumbo, who will be on probation for three years, has been ordered to stay away from Twain and her family, the Toronto Sun reported. He also is forbidden from contacting her in any way.

Palumbo, 51, was arrested March 27 at the Juno Awards ceremony in Toronto after he tried to deliver a card to the recording star, violating a restraining order Twain already had against him.

The National Post said he pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a court order and criminal harassment.

Twain testified via video that Palumbo caused her to fear for her safety, the Post said.
