A Los Angeles judge last week granted the Disney star a temporary restraining order against Thomas Brodnicki, 46, a former suburban Chicago man with a criminal record for stalking young women.
Gomez' restraining order request said Brodnicki told police he traveled from Illinois to Los Angeles to see the 19-year-old star.
He visited her workplace at least three times and allegedly told a doctor at a Los Angeles mental health facility that he had conversations with God in which he "was thinking about killing" Gomez, documents obtained by E! Online said.
Des Plaines, Ill., Police Chief Jim Prandini said Brodnicki was jailed in Illinois several times in the past decade for stalking a young waitress and a convenience store clerk, The (Arlington Heights, Ill.) Daily Herald reported Wednesday.
"He's got some severe psychological problems," Prandini told the newspaper. "With the threat of physical harm to someone, he's really stepped it up a notch. He needs psychological help."
