John Tait told a court in Edinburgh that he and Christopher McGirr planned the hoax while they were gambling at a casino, The Scotsman reported. McGirr agreed to beat Tait up, leaving him bleeding on an office floor where he was found by two janitors. The safe was open.
Tait was a trainee supervisor at a Scotmid store in Edinburgh. Scotmid is a cooperative chain of supermarkets.
Police who examined the tapes from security cameras at the store found Tait going in with McGirr on his day off.
Tait pleaded guilty to stealing, admitting that he took 3,000 pounds (about $6,000) from the safe a few days before the fake robbery and got McGirr to remove a similar amount. McGirr admitted beating Tait.
