The sixth installment in J.K. Rowling's popular series sold 6.9 million copies in the first 24 hours, setting a U.S. sales record, publisher Scholastic said in a news release Wednesday.

Sales of the first five titles in both paperback and hardcover received a sales boost that pushed half them all back onto national best-seller lists, the publisher said.

Rowling and illustrator Mary GrandPre have been nominated for a Quills Award for best children's chapter book/middle grade. The readers will choose the winner, which will be announced Oct. 11.

All told, there are more than 116.5 million copies of the U.S. editions of the first six "Harry Potter" books in print. Each of the books has been a No. 1 bestseller.
