In an appearance Wednesday night on "Late Night with David Letterman," Crowe called his fit of rage in New York early Monday "spectacularly stupid" and blamed it on "combination of jet lag, loneliness and adrenaline." He had just returned to New York from a whirlwind trip to Manchester, England, to see a boxing match.

He reportedly threw the fit at 4 a.m. at the Mercer Hotel when he was unable to call his wife Danielle Spencer in Australia. A telephone struck the concierge, Nestor Estrada, and Crowe, 41, faces assault charges which, on conviction carry a maximum seven year sentence.

Earlier, in an interview with the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Crowe said the attack was "the most shameful situation I've ever gotten myself in."
