Negotiations broke down several weeks ago when NBC said DreamWorks' $1 billion asking price was too much.
A source told the Times NBC put up a counterproposal Friday that is high enough to reopen talks. Paramount Pictures is also interested in acquiring DreamWorks, which was founded 10 years ago by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen.
DreamWorks is known for its animated films as well as live-action hits like "Gladiator" and "American Beauty." But the company has had a hard time this summer, with "The Island" flopping in theaters and sales DVD sales failing to meet market expectations.
