Gritty FX police drama "The Shield" has a lock on returning for a fifth year, sources told The Hollywood Reporter.

"The Shield" averaged 3.2 million viewers an episode in its fourth season, up from an average 2.5 million viewers in the third season.

The cable network's 13-episode pickup for this fall's fifth season of "The Shield" is a second recent victory for creator and Executive Producer Shawn Ryan.

CBS earlier picked up "The Unit," a drama about a special operations unit, on which Ryan and David Mamet are executive producers.
