"The Shield" averaged 3.2 million viewers an episode in its fourth season, up from an average 2.5 million viewers in the third season.
The cable network's 13-episode pickup for this fall's fifth season of "The Shield" is a second recent victory for creator and Executive Producer Shawn Ryan.
CBS earlier picked up "The Unit," a drama about a special operations unit, on which Ryan and David Mamet are executive producers.
