Report: Barack Obama mulling outdoor stadium acceptance speech

UPI News Service, 07/03/2008

Barack Obama may give his Democratic presidential nomination acceptance speech at Denver's Invesco Field at Mile High, the Denver Post said.

Citing sources, the newspaper said the contemplated move from Denver's Pepsi Center to the football stadium would allow tens of thousands of people to see the address. Such a move would be a significant break with tradition but it would be consistent with Obama's campaign theme of change, the Post said.

It would not be unprecedented. In 1960, the Democratic Party nominated Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy at the Los Angeles Sports Arena but Kennedy delivered his acceptance speech at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

A switch in Denver could pose a problem for broadcasters who have planned to televise the acceptance speech from the podium at the Pepsi Center.

Plans call for Obama to deliver his acceptance speech Aug. 28, the 45th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington.

Matthew Chandler, the Obama campaign's Colorado press secretary, told the newspaper in an e-mail that no decision has been reached on whether the move the address to the stadium, which can seat more than 75,000. The Pepsi Center seats about 20,000.
