Repentant toy thief pays 60+ years later

UPI News Service, 10/10/2008

The mayor of Abilene, Kan., said he recently received a letter and $10 from someone who admitted to stealing a toy more than 60 years ago.

Mayor Lynn Peterson and city commissioners who were shown the letter during Tuesday's commission work session said the sender -- who identified himself only as "Bob" -- said in the letter that he had taken the toy "in either 1943 or 1944" and wished for the $10 to be passed along to family of the store owners or donated to a needy family to buy toys, The Abilene Reflector-Chronicle reported Thursday.

"I apologize for any problem this may cause you and hopefully, you will be able to help me resolve this issue," the letter read.

The city manager said the money was donated to Toys for Tots to help the charity provide toys for underprivileged children.
