Rep. says she wanted to sing the blues

UPI News Service, 11/13/2005

Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., may represent the Rochester, N.Y., area in Congress, but what she really wanted to do was sing the blues.

Slaughter grew up in Kentucky and she says she sang Gospel and other music with her family at weddings and funerals

"The only ambition I ever had was to be a blues singer," Slaughter recently told the Black Achievers in Industry Awards dinner held at the Hyatt Regency in Buffalo, N.Y.

Slaughter made the remark after she asked the guest speaker, Clifton Davis, who wrote "Never Can Say Goodbye," to sing a bar from his song. Slaughter sang along.

The veteran congresswoman said meeting Davis was a huge thrill because "Never Can Say Goodbye" was one of her favorite songs.

"At first, I didn't know he was going to be there, and then this gorgeous man just stood up and said, 'I'm Clifton Davis,'" Slaughter told the Buffalo (N.Y.) News. "I'm sure I did a double-take. I was absolutely stunned."
