Record attempt uses 430 gallons of stout

UPI News Service, 11/22/2009

Two pub owners in Tustin, Calif., said they filled an 8-foot-tall glass with 430 gallons of Guinness stout in an attempt to set a new world record.

David Copley and Eric Johnson, co-owners of the Auld Dubliner Irish Pub, said they tried to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records on Saturday by using a 900-pound glass to hold 2,772 pounds of beer, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.

Johnson said while the glass will remain on display and eventually tour to other Auld Dubliner pubs across the United States, the Guinness stout will be consumed Sunday.

"We dipped our glasses in, and we have a pump," Johnson said. "We're going to drink it."

Copley said he and Johnson came up with the unusual record attempt after learning about an award given for the world's largest Irish coffee.

"Guinness seemed the obvious choice. We're an Irish pub and Guinness is synonymous with Ireland," Copley said.

The Register said the record targeted by the two pub owners currently belongs to Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse in Chicago. The restaurant filled a 100-gallon glass that was 4 feet tall in February 2008.
