Rare sheet of stamps featuring Audrey Hepburn sell for $600,000

UPI News Service, 10/17/2010

A rare sheet of postage stamps featuring Audrey Hepburn has been sold for more than $600,000 in Berlin, officials said.

In 2001, the German postal service printed 14 million stamps with an image of Hepburn from her famed role in Breakfast at Tiffany's, but they were ordered destroyed because the image was incorrect, E!Online reported.

A few of the 10-stamp sheets survived, including the sheet sold Saturday. Ironically, it is the same one sent to Hepburn's son, Sean Ferrer, for approval.

The commemorative stamp shows a cigarette holder dangling from Hepburn's mouth, not the sunglasses she was holding in the original photograph, the report said.

Ferrer refused to give the postal service permission to sell the stamps, and they were ordered destroyed, but a few have survived.

Over half of the proceeds will be donated to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, with the remaining amount given to UNICEF Germany, the report said.
