Radio shock jocks' influence may force move of California trial

UPI News Service, 04/05/2008

A federal judge in Santa Ana, Calif., says he may consider relocating a public corruption trial because of two radio shock jocks' influence on potential jurors.

U.S. District Judge Andrew Guilford said after hearing excerpts of KFI's "John and Ken Show" he may consider moving former Sheriff Mike Carona's corruption trial to get an impartial jury, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported Saturday.

Attorney Brian Sun read excerpts from the radio talk show in which the two hosts urged listeners to deny they listen to their series if they are chosen for Carona's jury.

"You've got to fake it, OK?" Sun read from one of the broadcasts. "You have to lie to them."

Guilford was not amused by the radio hosts' antics, the Register reported.

"I find it extremely unfortunate that a radio show would suggest people lie in this court," Guilford said Friday. "That's not what American justice is all about."

Carona pleaded innocent in November to charges of conspiracy, mail fraud and tampering with a grand jury witness. He announced in January he was resigning to concentrate on his legal defense.
