President Bush admits to having assistant download iPod tunes

UPI News Service, 04/11/2005

U.S. President George Bush enjoys the iPod music player his daughters gave him last year, but has an assistant download the tunes, the New York Times reports.

Since receiving it for his birthday in July, Bush has requested about 250 songs from his personal aide, Blake Gottesman, although the device can hold as many as 10,000 titles.

The playlist is heavy on traditional country singers like George Jones, Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney. He has selections by Van Morrison, whose "Brown Eyed Girl" is a Bush favorite, and John Fogerty's "Centerfield," which was played at Texas Rangers games when Bush was an owner.

"One thing that's interesting is that the president likes artists who don't like him," said Joe Levy, a deputy managing editor at Rolling Stone. He was referring to Fogerty, who was part of the anti-Bush "Vote for Change" concert tour across the United States last fall.

"What we're talking about is a lot of great artists from the '60s and '70s and more modern artists who sound like great artists from the '60s and '70s," Levy said. "This is basically Boomer rock 'n' roll and more recent music out of Nashville made for Boomers."
