Poll: 'Michiganders' embrace the label

UPI News Service, 02/11/2011

A Michigan pollster said a majority of state residents surveyed agree with Gov. Rick Snyder that they should be called Michiganders.

Resch Strategies by Marketing Resource Group in Lansing said the poll of 600 registered voters, conducted Jan. 24-27, found 58 percent proudly wear the label of Michigander while 12 percent preferred the term "Michiganian" and 12 percent said they had no preference, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.

The remaining 11 percent said they did not care for either term, Resch said.

Firm president Matt Resch said the poll reinforces the preference of Snyder, whose use of the term Michigander contrasts with the two previous governors, Jennifer Granholm and John Engler, who both preferred to use Michiganian.

Resch said Snyder's choice puts him "more in step with current voters."
