Political comics a profitable product

UPI News Service, 09/13/2011

A Washington state company said it found unexpected success by publishing comic books starring political figures, including President Barack Obama.

Darren Davis, president of Bluewater Productions, and Jason Schultz, executive vice president of the company, said they started in the comics niche by releasing the "Female Force" series detailing the lives of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin in 2009, and each comic sold more than 25,000 copies, Politico reported Monday.

"Nobody thought we'd be popular," Davis said. "They think that comic books should be superheroes in tights."

Davis and Schultz said they have since produced comics starring public figures such as Obama, Colin Powell, Ronald Reagan, Bill O'Reilly, Caroline Kennedy, Al Franken, Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Obama, Arnold Schwarzenegger and George W. Bush.

The publishers said they are currently working on comic books starring Gen. David Petraeus and "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart.

Davis said the creators are careful to keep political bias out of the comics, earning them fans, including former President Bill Clinton and conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.

"We don't want to put our agendas into it because we don't have an agenda," Davis said. "That's very important for this series, so we'll always pick people from both sides of the fence."
