Police: Alleged tow truck thief wanted to drive from Fla. to New York
UPI News Service, 07/26/2013
A Florida tow truck driver said he was only kidding when he told a woman charged with grand theft she could take his truck to New York.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said the tow truck driver responded to a call about a woman in a broken-down rental car on Interstate 95 near Ormond Beach Thursday morning, and the woman asked the driver if he could drive her to New York, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Friday.
The driver said he couldn't drive that far and the woman then asked if she could take the yellow flatbed to New York herself.
"I thought she was playin'," the tow truck driver told deputies.
The driver said he jokingly said "sure" before giving the woman a "serious no."
However, the sheriff's office said the woman then jumped into the truck and sped away.
Investigators said the wrecking company used the truck's GPS to track the vehicle and deputies caught up to the woman at a gas station in Palm Coast.
Angela Estrella, 37, was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.
