A catamaran made with plastic bottles sailed into Sydney's harbor Monday, completing a voyage its crew says was aimed at drawing attention to pollution.

The Plastiki, captained by banking family heir David de Rothschild, traveled 8,000 miles from San Francisco to Australia.

De Rothschild told those who showed up to watch the Plastiki arrive in port that people need to start reducing the amount of plastic waste that winds up in the oceans, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

"You go a couple of hundred miles off the coast, and nobody is claiming responsibility," he said. "Which allows people just to do what they want, and allows them to abuse the ocean's depth, and its so-called scale.

"The Plastiki is literally a metaphorical message in a bottle about beating waste and reducing our human fingerprints on our natural environment."

The boat will be displayed at the Australian National Maritime Museum for the next month, the ABC said.
