Police in Washington state said a commercial pilot was unable to make a scheduled flight when he was arrested for allegedly trying to steal a car.
Joe Haley, 66, told police he was getting into his rental car Monday night at a hotel in SeaTac when a man climbed into the vehicle's back seat, KIRO-TV, Seattle, reported Wednesday.
"I said, 'What are you doing?' He said, 'You know what I want,'" Haley recalled.
He said the man demanded the car and refused to get out, so he pulled out a gun he was carrying and threatened to shoot the intruder.
However, Haley said he instead used the gun to hit the man when he refused to exit the car.
Haley said the man eventually slumped over and he went into the hotel to find help. He came back out when he found no one inside and the suspect exited the car and chased him before speeding off in the rental car.
Police said the suspect crashed the car a block away.
Crosman Carey, 43, was taken to the King County Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft and drunken driving.
Police said Carey, a pilot for Omni Airlines, had been scheduled to fly a plane from Seattle to Japan the following day. He was unable to make the flight.
