Paul Walker's dad: I'd implored him to be more careful

UPI News Service, 12/06/2013

Paul Walker Sr. says he tried to get his "daredevil" son to adopt a safer lifestyle shortly before the actor died in a fiery car crash in Los Angeles.

Paul Walker Jr., 40, died as the passenger of a Porsche sports car driven by his friend last Saturday.

"I sat there, I looked at him and I said: 'You know, I love you very much ... If anything was to happen to anybody in this family, it would be a rough deal,'" Paul Walker Sr. told E! News this week, recalling the last conversation he had with his son.

"I said, 'Promise me, no more daredevil stuff.' I said: 'If in your heart, you say, I can do this, then by all means, do it. If your mind says, maybe not. Then don't.' I looked at him, I said, 'Will you promise me that?'" he said, adding the "Fast & Furious" star agreed to be more careful.

"I said, 'You know, promises are a very important thing here, Paul," Walker Sr. said. "I said, 'Say OK,' and he said, 'OK.' You know a lot of us, sometimes we make promises and get caught up in the moment and stuff like that, but I can tell I got to him. I can tell that I was very serious. Sometimes sons think of their fathers and their grandfathers as these bigger-than-life people."

Walker Jr. died from the impact of the crash, as well as from burns he sustained when the vehicle burst into flames, officials said. Why the car hit a tree and light post remains under investigation.
