Oklahoma police chief caught speeding writes himself ticket

UPI News Service, 04/19/2017

An Oklahoma police chief caught on camera speeding 20 mph over the limit apologized to his community and issued himself a speeding ticket.

Sperry Police Chief Justin Burch explained the situation in a post on the department's official Facebook page.

"I am writing to inform everyone that I, Chief Burch, was breaking the law by speeding on 103rd St N. A citizen made a complaint about it and I acknowledge that I was wrong in traveling at 75 and 80 mph. I did have a reason for being in a hurry, but my speeds were not reasonable. I am holding myself accountable just as anyone else would have to be. I have written myself a citation and will be paying it just like every other citizen. I regret my actions and I sincerely apologize. I hope everyone has a great Easter weekend and please be safe."

Burch said he was going at least 20 mph over the speed limit when he was caught on camera. He said the citation would cost more than $300.

The chief said he isn't sure if he would have issued himself the ticket if he hadn't been recorded on video.

"You know, honestly, probably not," Burch told KTUL-TV. "You're not going to have people come in and say, hey, I was speeding, or I ran the stop sign, please write me a citation. But just like anybody else who did get caught, I need to be held accountable for my actions."
