O.J. Simpson convicted of stealing satellite TV signal

UPI News Service, 07/26/2005

A judge in Miami has ordered O.J. Simpson to pay DIRECTV $25,000 plus attorney fees for pirating the satellite TV provider's signal, the company says.

U.S. Judge Joan A. Lenard granted DIRECTV's motion for summary judgment in a civil suit filed against Simpson following the 2001 seizure of two illegal devices at Simpson's Miami home, DIRECTV said in a news release Tuesday.

The devices were being used to intercept DIRECTV programming without the company's authorization.

Simpson admitted he did not have DIRECTV account, the company said.

A spokesman from DIRECTV's legal department said the ruling "serves as a reminder that there are consequences to signal theft, whether you're O.J. Simpson or John Q. Public."
