'Nurse-in' staged for breast feeding moms

UPI News Service, 07/01/2011

A group of about 50 breastfeeding moms and supportive dads gathered for a "nurse-in" in Michigan to protest a nursing mom being asked to leave a bus.

The parents gathered outside the Oakland County Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation bus terminal in Troy Friday morning to protest Afrykayn Moon of Taylor being asked to leave a bus while breastfeeding her infant son last Friday and promote education of breastfeeding as a normal activity deserving of legal protections, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

The group said it chose the SMART station because it is where the driver involved in last Friday's incident works. Officials said the driver has been put on paid leave and reminded the company does not bar women from nursing on its vehicles.

Friday's event came after state Sen. Rebekah Warren, D-Ann Arbor, reintroduced legislation to protect nursing mothers from discrimination in the state. The legislation did not advance to a full vote during last year's legislative session.
