San Antonio residents are upset about a children's cable show that said the Battle of the Alamo was fought so "white farmers could keep their slaves."

The 50-second piece on Nickelodeon's "My Back Yard" showed a San Antonio teenager who said the conflict over slavery between white farmers and the Mexican government, which had abolished slavery, "led up" to the famous 1836 battle.

In a city where those killed in the historic battle are viewed as heroes, some find the claims untenable, WOAI-AM, San Antonio, reported Tuesday.

"I think it's a shame that anybody would take that approach," said Alamo Director David Stewart, adding it was "an insult to the Mexicans ... who fought for freedom and liberty in the Alamo."

A senior producer for Nickelodeon's Nick News said the piece was not meant to convey the whole story of the battle.

"We recognize that there were several key issues in the Battle of the Alamo and one of them was slavery," said Mark Lyons.
