Forty-six-year-old Steven Koplan of Staten Island, N.Y., an unemployed computer programmer, will not serve time in prison because he has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and delusional disorders, the N.Y. Daily News reported Saturday.
Koplan was sentenced to 10 years of probation and must give probation officers ongoing access to his home computer, the Staten Island district attorney's office said Friday.
"Although he (Brokaw) doesn't want to hear from Mr. Koplan again, he hopes he does well," said Assistant District Attorney David Frey.
Koplan's messages were sent between Sept. 11 and Nov. 21, 2003.
